Extremely lightweight and smooth Thonet bike
It has been evident in many cases before where we have got to see two or more opposite prospects meeting together to form one single thing which looks like a work of an expert. Similarly when we talk about a product which is a result of combined intense efforts put together by an architect, a furniture company and Cycle passionate it becomes a little tricky to decide what exactly that product would be like. Further not intending to put in any kind of hard guess work we give you an extremely lightweight and smooth Thonet bike made of bent wood.
This unbelievable yet true invention in the making cycle is brought forward by a London based architect Andy Martin who crossed paths with Thonet, a furniture company after which both of them decided to create a unique bicycle by combining the architect’s design prowess with Thonet’s years of experience in steam bending.
The Thonet bicycles are made by steam bending beech wood that looks modern and yet aesthetically simple. Thonet developed the steam bending process back in the ‘30s and today the contours of the body are cut using CNC machines after which they are reinforced with connectors and spring rods.
With Carbon fiber HED H3, the bike is extremely lightweight and smooth. Although the bike lacks brakes, it is available with several interchangeable gear ratios. Only limited pieces of this bike are available from Andy Martin’s site for $69,000 (£43,000).
The Andy Martin’s Elegant Cycle Crafted Completely from Bent Beech Wood by Thonet looks promising and worth its price especially after looking into the history of the makers involved in its making. Drawing upon Thonet’s history of quality, bentwood furniture, Andy Martin expertise over developing a beautiful, sweeping bike frame made from steamed beech wood.
